How to write a teacher resume
Give the license its own section, high on the page
Five fields, one line: state • certificate type • endorsement (subject/grade) • status • expiration. “Washington Professional Teaching Certificate, Elementary K-8 with ESL Endorsement — active, expires June 2028.” It's the first thing district screeners verify — against the state database — so make it findable in two seconds. List every endorsement, even ones you're not currently using.
Mirror the posting's language — 8–12 exact matches
District screening systems and recruiters search on the posting's own terms: the grade band as written, classroom management, differentiated instruction, IEP/504, the named curriculum or EdTech. Write abbreviations both ways once — “IEP (Individualized Education Program)” — so both forms match.
Quantify student outcomes, not teaching duties
Score and proficiency gains, IEP-goal completion rates, behavior-referral reductions, club enrollment growth, family-engagement metrics, grant dollars, class sizes and section counts. “Taught 3rd grade” is the posting; “raised reading proficiency 30% with guided reading groups” is a shortlist.
New teachers: student teaching IS your experience section
List it under Teaching Experience with the title “Student Teacher,” the school, grade, dates, and quantified bullets — it should take the most space on a new-grad resume. The credential is the qualifying fact and the first thing verified. Own section, top third of the page, full five-field format.
Duty bullets with no student impact
“Taught math lessons to 4th graders” fits every teacher alive. Attach the score gain, the referral drop, the attendance change — evidence a committee can repeat aloud.
One resume for every district
Mirror each posting: the grade band as written, the named curriculum, the EdTech stack. Aim for 8–12 exact keyword matches per application.
Generic skills instead of teaching competencies
“Organized, hard-working, passionate” screens as filler. Classroom management, differentiated instruction, data-driven small groups — the competencies postings actually list.
Sending an academic CV — or three pages
K-12 hiring wants a resume: one page under ~5 years, two for veterans with certifications and PD worth the room. CVs are for higher-ed applications.
Photos, graphics and decorative layouts
District systems parse text. Photos and infographic layouts break parsing and can trigger bias-screening removal. Clean single-column text wins.
An expired or in-progress credential presented as current
License status is checked against state databases — misrepresenting it is a screening-out offense. Write “In progress, expected May 2027” or “Application pending, submitted March 2026,” never a bare “Certified.”

How do I list a teaching credential that's still in progress?
Precisely, and never as a bare “Certified.” Use “In progress — expected May 2027” while enrolled, or “Application pending — submitted March 2026” once it's with the state. Districts verify license status against state databases, so vagueness reads as misrepresentation. Add exams already passed (edTPA, Praxis) as separate lines — those are done facts.
Does student teaching count as real experience?
Yes — and for a new graduate it should be the biggest block on the page. List it under Teaching Experience with the title “Student Teacher,” school, grade, dates, and quantified bullets (students taught, groups run, IEP work, family contact). A full-year placement plus a long-term-substitute stretch reads as a first year of teaching, because it was.
Resume or CV? One page or two?
K-12 districts want a resume, not an academic CV — CVs belong in higher-ed hiring. One page under roughly five years of experience; two pages are legitimate for veterans carrying certifications, PD and leadership worth the room. Three pages helps nobody.
I'm licensed in one state and applying in another. What do I list?
Each license on its own line, active one first, with status and expiration. All 50 states plus DC participate in the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement, but it's not automatic reciprocity — receiving states can require extra tests or coursework, so name your transfer status honestly (“Oregon license active; Washington application under review”).

Not as a resume section. Keep the philosophy statement as a separate 1–2 page document and submit it when the district requests one — many applications do. On the resume itself, one sentence of philosophy woven into the summary is plenty; the rest of the space earns more as evidence.
I'm changing careers into teaching — how do I frame my old job?
Translate, don't list. Project management becomes curriculum planning and pacing; client relations becomes family engagement; training delivery becomes instruction — keep the numbers from the old career but re-frame them in classroom language. Lead the summary with your certification path (program name, clinical-year dates, exams passed), because that's the screener's first question about you.
