How to write an electrical engineer resume
Declare the track in the first line
Power and building systems, electronics and hardware, controls and automation, or power electronics. These are different hiring markets with different readers, and a resume that mixes their vocabulary equally reads as junior in both. Put it in the headline and let the rest of the page prove it.
For the power track, lead with licence, voltage and code
PE status and state, service ampacity and voltage classes, the codes you design to (NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 99, IEEE), and the study types you have run. In building and utility work the licence has legal weight, and the numbers are how a technical reviewer sizes your experience.
For the electronics track, lead with boards, bring-up and compliance
Boards designed to release, layer counts, the hard parts (high-speed routing, mixed-signal, power stages), whether you did bring-up and debug yourself, and how EMC and regulatory testing went. Units shipped is the strongest single number a hardware engineer can put on a page.
Name tools at product level
Altium, KiCad, LTspice, SKM, ETAP, AGi32, Revit MEP, AutoCAD Electrical, Studio 5000, TIA Portal. Engineering hiring filters hard on the specific package because licences and training cost money, and 'design software' matches nothing.
Show that the design met the real world
Passed inspection, cleared compliance testing, commissioned without rework, ran through a season, shipped in volume. Design that survived contact with a regulator, a factory or a construction site is the evidence that separates a designer from someone who produced drawings.

Not declaring which electrical discipline you work in
Power, electronics, controls or power electronics — say it in the headline. Two different markets read this resume.
No voltage classes, ampacity or board detail
These are the technical vocabulary of each track. Without them, 'electrical design experience' is unpriceable.
Omitting PE status on the power track
Give the licence and state, or the EIT year and exam date. In building and utility work it decides what you can be assigned.
Listing every tool ever opened
Name the ones you would be tested on, and show depth in the bullets. A long list with no depth reads as coursework.
Describing deliverables with no outcome
Drawings produced is activity. Inspection passed, compliance cleared on first submission, throughput raised — that is result.
Hiding firmware or software ability
In hardware roles, an engineer who can debug the driver themselves is worth more. Say so plainly if it is true.
A generic engineering summary
'Detail-oriented engineer with strong problem-solving skills' is on every resume in the stack. Use those lines for track, scale and one hard thing you did.

Do electrical engineers need a PE licence?
It depends entirely on the track. In building systems, utilities and consulting, the PE lets you seal drawings and is close to essential for progression. In electronics, embedded and semiconductor work, most engineers never pursue it and nobody asks. Decide which market you are in before deciding whether to invest four years in the path.
How do I write a resume that works for both power and electronics roles?
You do not — write two. The vocabulary, the tools and the evidence are different, and a hybrid document reads as unfocused to both readers. Keep one master file and lead each version with the track you are applying into.
What are the strongest numbers on an electronics engineer resume?
Boards designed to release, layer count and the hard constraints (high-speed, mixed-signal, power density), units shipped, and how compliance testing went. 'Passed FCC Class B on first submission' is a specific, verifiable claim that separates you immediately.
What are the strongest numbers on a power engineer resume?
Service ampacity and voltage classes, project square footage or construction value, study types run, generator and UPS capacities, and outcomes at inspection. Codes you design to are part of the vocabulary — name them.
How do I show experience as a new graduate?
Senior design projects and internships written as work: what you designed, to what constraint, in which tool, and what happened when it was tested. Add the FE result — it is the credential a power-track employer looks for at graduate level.
Should I include a patents or publications section?
Yes if you have them, particularly in semiconductors, defence and R&D-heavy hardware. One line each with the number and title is enough; it belongs after experience, not before.
One page or two?
One page through the first five to eight years, two once you have projects, licences and a substantial tool set. Keep the track, the licence and one flagship project on the first half of page one.
