Sales is the one function where the numbers are the resume.

A sales manager reading your resume is doing arithmetic. What was the quota, what did you close against it, what was the deal size, how long was the cycle, and was the territory handed to you warm or built from nothing. A sales resume without those figures reads as someone who did not hit their number — because anyone who did would have written it down.

Reflects general practice across US and European sales hiring as reviewed in 2026. Quota structures vary widely by segment — enterprise, mid-market and transactional roles are not compared on the same scale.

Quota, attainment, and the context that makes them mean something

Write the quota and the percentage you hit against it, for each year you can. '$1.2M quota, 118% attainment (FY25), 104% (FY24)' is the single highest-value line in a sales resume. Then add the context a manager needs to price it: average deal size, sales cycle length, whether it was new business or renewal, inbound or self-sourced. A 140% attainment on a $200k transactional quota and a 96% on a $4M enterprise quota are different jobs, and only the context tells them apart.

What every sales resume has to prove

The number, against a stated target

A percentage with no quota behind it is unreadable, and 'exceeded targets consistently' is what people write when they did not. Give the target and the result. If you were ranked, say where: '#3 of 22 reps' is instantly comparable.

What kind of selling it was

New logo or expansion. Inbound or self-sourced. One call or nine months and a procurement review. Named accounts or a territory you cold-built. These change the difficulty of the same headline number more than anything else on the page.

The pipeline behind the closes

Closed revenue is the outcome; pipeline is the evidence you can repeat it. Meetings booked, opportunities created, conversion between stages, sourced versus assigned. Managers hiring for a territory build read this section hardest.

Who you sold to

Buyer seniority and industry are qualifying criteria in most postings — a rep who sells to CISOs in regulated finance is not interchangeable with one who sells to small-business owners. Name the titles and the segments.

Each guide has a full annotated example, summaries by seniority and the keywords that role is filtered on.

Bullets that get read, and the ones that do not

Same experience, rewritten. The difference is always the same thing: something a reader can check.

Consistently exceeded sales targets.

118% of a $1.2M new-business quota in FY25 (104% in FY24); ranked 3rd of 22 reps.

Why: The generic version is the single most common line in sales resumes and carries no information. The rewrite is checkable, which is exactly why it is believed.

Built strong relationships with key clients.

Grew nine named accounts from $410k to $680k ARR over two years; renewed all nine, two on multi-year terms.

Why: Relationships are only visible in retention and expansion. Give the manager the number they would have asked for.

Generated new leads through outbound efforts.

Self-sourced 60% of my closed revenue from cold outbound — roughly 40 calls and 60 emails a day, 12 to 15 discovery meetings booked per month.

Why: Self-sourced versus assigned is the first thing a manager wants to know, and activity volume proves the number was not a fluke of territory.

Used Salesforce to track opportunities.

Kept a 3.2x pipeline coverage in Salesforce with forecast accuracy inside 10% for six consecutive quarters.

Why: Every rep 'uses Salesforce'. Forecast accuracy is a discipline signal, and sales leaders hire for it because it makes their own number predictable.

How the resume changes as you move up

  1. SDR / BDR and retail floor

Activity and conversion carry the page: meetings booked, qualification rate, dials, units or attachment rate on a retail floor. Show consistency across months rather than one spike.

  2. Account executive

Quota, attainment, deal size, cycle length, sourced mix. Two or three years of figures side by side beats any adjective — a manager wants to see whether the number repeats.

  3. Senior / enterprise AE

Complexity replaces volume: multi-stakeholder deals, procurement and security review, land-and-expand, co-selling with partners. Name the largest deal you closed and what it took.

  4. Sales management

Team attainment, ramp time, retention of reps, forecast accuracy, process you installed. Your own selling record still belongs on the page, but it is no longer the headline.

How these resumes actually get filtered

Sales resumes are typically scanned in under ten seconds by someone who is looking for one thing: a number next to a target. That reader is often the hiring sales manager rather than a recruiter, and their instinct is calibrated — they know what a realistic attainment sequence looks like and they discount rounded, uniform figures. Before that, the applicant tracking system will match on tools and methodology names from the posting, so the CRM and any named sales framework should appear verbatim. The combination that wins is a machine-matchable skills line and a top third that is almost entirely arithmetic.

Mistakes specific to sales resumes

Percentages with no quota attached.

'Achieved 130%' of what? Give the target in currency. Without it the reader assumes the base was small.

Hiding a missed year by omitting it.

A gap in the sequence is read as a miss anyway. Write it with the reason — territory change, product sunset, a year the whole team was under — and what you did about it. Managers have all missed a number; they distrust people who pretend otherwise.

Listing every CRM, dialler and enablement tool you have touched.

Name the CRM and one or two tools that matter. Nobody has been hired for knowing six sequencers.

Publishing client names bound by an NDA.

Describe them instead — 'a Fortune 500 logistics operator', 'three regional health systems'. It reads as discreet, which is itself a selling signal.

Writing responsibilities where results belong.

'Managed a territory of 200 accounts' is a job description. What happened to it? Growth, retention, penetration — the resume needs the after, not just the before.

Sales resume FAQ

What if I cannot disclose exact revenue figures?

Use percentages against quota and relative scale: '118% of quota', 'grew the territory by roughly 60%', 'largest deal was the biggest in the region that year'. That is enough for a manager to price you, and it keeps you inside whatever your contract says.

How do I handle a year I missed quota?

State it and explain the context in one clause — a re-cut territory, a product pulled, a market that stopped. Then show what you changed. Selective sequences are transparent, and the assumption a reader makes about a missing year is usually worse than the truth.

Should a sales resume be one page or two?

One page early on. Two once you have several years of quota history worth showing — and in sales, the year-by-year table is the strongest thing on the page, so do not compress it to save space.

Do I put commission or earnings on my resume?

Generally no. OTE and W-2 numbers come up in the screening call, and on paper they invite comparison against pay bands you cannot see. Attainment says the same thing without the risk.

Does the design of a sales resume matter?

Only in that it must not get in the way. Sales postings attract high volume, so the parse has to be clean and the numbers have to be findable in seconds. We tested 36 layouts through four real parsers and published which ones survived intact.
