HR generalist resume examples for the toughest possible reader: another HR person.
You are being screened by someone who writes these documents for a living, knows what every phrase is covering for, and has read four hundred resumes that say 'handled employee relations matters'. They are looking for scope — how many employees, how many locations, which regimes you actually own — and for evidence of judgement, which in this profession means investigations that were closed properly and compliance that held up. This guide shows how to give them that without breaching the confidentiality that is the job's first obligation.

Why this example works
Scope is stated in headcount, sites and states
340 employees, four states, two sites. Multi-state is the single biggest complexity multiplier in US HR work — different leave laws, wage rules and posting requirements — and stating it immediately places your experience for the reader.
Investigations are counted and their outcomes described
'28 investigations closed with documented findings and no resulting claims.' Volume plus process discipline plus outcome. To an HR reader this is the strongest possible evidence, and 'handled employee relations issues' says none of it.
Compliance is owned, not merely mentioned
FMLA and ADA administration, I-9 audit with a remediation count, an FLSA classification review that changed eleven roles. These are the regimes that generate real liability, and specifics show you have carried them rather than watched someone else do it.
HR Generalist resume summary examples
Three to four lines: scope, stack or specialism, one quantified win. Match the register to your seniority.
HR coordinator / assistant
HR coordinator supporting a 900-employee population across onboarding, benefits enrolment and HRIS transactions in UKG. Ran two open-enrolment cycles at 98% on-time completion and produce the monthly turnover reporting directors use. Working toward SHRM-CP; comfortable being the first person an employee asks and knowing which questions to escalate.
HR generalist (small company)
Sole HR generalist for a 180-person business — recruiting, onboarding, benefits, employee relations, payroll liaison and compliance, all of it. Built the handbook, the leave process and the performance cycle from nothing. The role where every problem arrives at one desk, which is why I can tell you exactly which ones cost money if you get them wrong.
HR generalist (multi-site)
HR generalist supporting 340 employees across four states and two sites. Own employee relations, leave administration and compliance — 28 investigations closed last year with documented findings and no resulting claims, and 90-day turnover cut from 22% to 13% after an onboarding rebuild. SHRM-CP; run Workday for the business unit.
Employee relations focus
HR professional specialising in employee relations for a 2,400-employee services organisation. Lead complex investigations including harassment and retaliation matters, coach managers through performance and discipline, and partner with employment counsel on escalations. Closed 60+ matters last year; rewrote the investigation protocol now used company-wide.
HR business partner track
HR business partner supporting a 400-person engineering organisation through hiring plans, performance calibration, compensation cycles and organisational change. Partnered on a restructure affecting 45 roles, from consultation planning through to redeployment of 12 employees. Fluent in the operational side — headcount modelling, attrition analysis and the awkward conversation before it becomes a case.

How to write an hr generalist resume
Lead with scope: headcount, sites, states
'HR generalist' covers a one-person function at a 60-person company and a specialist seat inside a 5,000-person organisation. Employee population, number of locations and number of states place you instantly — and multi-state is the biggest complexity signal in US HR, because leave law, wage rules and notice requirements all fragment at the state line.
Count investigations and describe how they closed
Volume, matter types at a general level, and the process discipline: written findings, consistent recommendations, escalation to counsel where required, and the absence of resulting claims where that is true. This is the closest thing employee relations has to a performance metric, and almost nobody puts it on the page.
Name the compliance regimes you personally own
FMLA, ADA interactive process, FLSA classification, I-9, state leave laws, EEO-1 reporting. Owning them is different from being aware of them, so attach evidence — an audit with a remediation count, a classification review with a number of roles changed, a process you built.
Name the HRIS and ATS by product
Workday, UKG, ADP, BambooHR, Paylocity; Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS. Systems are hard filters in HR hiring because migration cost is real, and 'HRIS experience' matches nothing. Say what you do in them too — configuration, reporting, data integrity, an implementation you worked on.
Demonstrate confidentiality by how you write
Never describe an identifiable matter — no names, no roles specific enough to identify, no outcomes tied to an individual. Aggregate instead: counts, categories, process. The reader is assessing your judgement about disclosure while they read, and a good anecdote told badly is a disqualifying answer.

'Handled employee relations issues'
To an HR reader this is a euphemism with no content. Give volume, category, process and outcome.
Describing a specific case, even anonymised thinly
If a colleague could identify the matter, it is a breach. Aggregate to counts and categories — the discretion is itself the evidence.
'HRIS experience' with no product named
Workday, UKG, ADP, BambooHR. Systems are a hard filter in this function, and the generic phrase matches nothing.
Omitting headcount and multi-state scope
Without them the reader cannot price the role. Put both in the company line.
Claiming compliance ownership you did not have
An HR interviewer will ask how you ran the interactive process or handled a classification test. Say 'supported' where you supported.
A soft-skills list where evidence should be
'Excellent communicator, trusted advisor' is on every HR resume. Replace with manager coaching counts, training delivered, or a policy you wrote that stuck.
Leaving certification status ambiguous
SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR with the year, or 'sitting for SHRM-CP in November'. Precision matters to a reader who holds one.
HR Generalist salary ranges (US)
United States market. Absolute figures differ by country — the gaps between levels travel better than the numbers.
| Median (HR specialists, May 2024) | $72,910 |
| HR coordinator / assistant | typically below the median |
| HR generalist, small company | around the median, with the broadest scope |
| HR generalist, large organisation or multi-state | generally above the median |
| HR business partner / employee relations lead | highest of the non-management tracks |
BLS median for human resources specialists is $72,910 (May 2024), with employment projected to grow about 6% through 2034 — faster than average — and roughly 81,800 openings a year. Pay varies sharply by whether the role is a true generalist in a small company (broad, lower-paid) or a generalist seat inside a large HR function (narrower, better paid), and by industry more than by title.

Certifications worth listing
- SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP — the SHRM credentials, widely requested in US postings and increasingly the default ask at generalist level
- PHR and SPHR (HRCI) — the longer-established alternative; both families are recognised, and some employers name one specifically
- Certificate in workplace investigations — a genuine differentiator for employee-relations-heavy roles, where investigation quality is the risk
- HRIS product certification (Workday, UKG) — names a searchable skill in a market that filters on the platform already bought
- CEBS or benefits-specific credentials — worth it if you are moving toward a total-rewards or benefits specialism rather than staying generalist

HR Generalist resume FAQ
What is the difference between an HR generalist and an HR specialist?
A generalist covers the whole employee lifecycle for a population — recruiting, relations, benefits, compliance — while a specialist owns one area deeply, such as benefits, compensation or talent acquisition. Postings use both loosely, so read the duties. In small companies the generalist does everything; in large ones the title often means a narrow slice of a big function.
How do I write about investigations without breaching confidentiality?
Aggregate. Give the number closed, the general categories, and the process you followed — written findings, consistent recommendations, escalation to counsel. Never describe a matter in enough detail to identify anyone. The way you handle this on the page is itself the evidence the reader wants.
Is SHRM-CP or PHR worth getting?
Yes at generalist level and above. Both are widely requested and some postings screen for them outright, particularly in larger organisations. Which one matters less than having one — though if your target employers consistently name a specific credential, follow their lead.
What numbers can an HR generalist actually put on a resume?
Headcount supported, sites and states, investigations closed, turnover moved, time-to-fill, onboarding completion, open-enrolment completion, files audited and remediated, roles reclassified, managers coached, training delivered. HR is more measurable than most HR resumes suggest.
How do I show HR experience when I have only worked in one small company?
Lean into the breadth. A sole HR person builds handbooks, leave processes and performance cycles from scratch and touches every regime personally — that is a genuine and unusual claim. State the headcount so the scope is not overestimated, and name what you built rather than inherited.
Should I mention that I handle payroll?
If you do, yes — payroll liaison or ownership is common in generalist roles and is a real skill, particularly multi-state. Name the system and the population. Just do not let it dominate the page if you are applying for a relations-heavy seat.
Does an HR resume get screened by an ATS?
Almost always — HR teams are the heaviest users of their own tooling. Mirror the posting's exact vocabulary for systems and regimes, since matching is literal. Then remember a person reads it next, and that person is an expert in the language you are using.
