IT support resume examples written to be the first IT job, not the last one.

Help desk is how most people get into IT, and it is also where a lot of them stay. The difference shows up on the resume. One version lists tickets answered, systems touched and users supported — a description of work that automation is steadily absorbing. The other shows tickets that stopped arriving: the documentation you wrote, the image you rebuilt, the recurring failure you root-caused, the script that removed a manual step. This guide covers both the metrics that prove you resolve things and the evidence that gets you moved up.

Experience

Technical Support Specialist, Tier 2 · Regional manufacturer (1,400 users, four sites)

2022 — Present

  • Close 45–60 tickets a week in ServiceNow at 78% first-contact resolution and an 11% escalation rate against a 19% team average.

  • Rebuilt the Windows imaging and deployment process in Intune — box to user down from about three hours to 40 minutes.
  • Root-caused a recurring VPN disconnect affecting 200 remote users to a driver revision; documented the fix and pushed it via policy.
  • Administer Active Directory and Microsoft 365 — accounts, groups, licences, shared mailboxes and onboarding/offboarding for ~25 moves a month.
  • Wrote 40+ knowledge base articles; the top five now deflect roughly 120 contacts a month.

Why this example works

Resolution and escalation are stated together

78% first-contact resolution and an 11% escalation rate against a 19% team average. Ticket counts measure how busy you were; this pair measures whether the tickets ended with you — which is the only thing that distinguishes support technicians from each other.

Half the bullets are about tickets that stopped arriving

Self-service reset, rebuilt imaging, a root-caused VPN fault, knowledge base articles that deflect contacts. This is the evidence that moves someone from help desk into systems or security, and it is what the automation trend makes valuable rather than replaceable.

The scripting and the repository are visible

PowerShell in skills and a GitHub link in the contact line. In support hiring, someone who automates is being read as a future systems administrator — and a small public repository is worth more than a third certification.

Technical Support Specialist resume summary examples

Three to four lines: scope, stack or specialism, one quantified win. Match the register to your seniority.

Entry / first IT job

IT support candidate with CompTIA A+ and two years of retail experience where I became the person who fixed the store's tills and back-office PCs. Home lab running Windows Server, Active Directory and a small Hyper-V environment. Comfortable with ticketing, remote tools and explaining a fix to someone who is already frustrated. Looking for a tier-1 help desk seat.

Tier 1 help desk

Help desk technician handling tier-1 tickets across 30 client environments at an MSP — Windows, M365, printing, VPN and endpoint issues under contractual SLAs. 96% first-response SLA attainment across roughly 2,000 tickets. Built the client onboarding checklist that removed the recurring setup errors.

Tier 2 specialist

Tier 2 support specialist for a 1,400-user organisation across four sites. 45–60 tickets a week at 78% first-contact resolution and an 11% escalation rate against a 19% team average. Cut password-reset volume ~60% with self-service rollout and rebuilt Windows imaging in Intune — box to user from three hours to 40 minutes.

Desktop / systems track

Support specialist moving toward systems administration: own endpoint management in Intune for 900 devices, the imaging pipeline and the patch compliance reporting. Automate onboarding in PowerShell — account, groups, licences and mailbox in one run instead of eleven manual steps. AZ-104 in progress.

Application / product support

Application support specialist for a B2B SaaS platform, handling tier-2 escalations from customer success — log analysis, API troubleshooting and reproducing defects for engineering. Write the reproduction steps engineers actually use, which cut the 'cannot reproduce' return rate on my tickets to under 5%. SQL-comfortable.

How to write a technical support specialist resume

  1. Pair resolution rate with escalation rate

First-contact resolution says the ticket ended with you; escalation rate says how often it did not. Give both, with the team average if you know it. Ticket volume alone measures how busy the queue was, not how good you are — and every candidate in the stack has a volume number.

  2. Spend half the page on tickets that stopped arriving

Documentation written, self-service enabled, an image rebuilt, a recurring fault root-caused, a manual process scripted. BLS expects this occupation to shrink slightly as automation absorbs routine contacts — so evidence that you are on the automating side rather than the absorbed side is the most valuable thing on the page.

  3. Name the environment precisely

User count, number of sites, Windows and macOS mix, on-prem or cloud identity, the ticketing platform, whether it is internal IT or an MSP with SLAs. These are hard filters and they also tell a hiring manager how much context you would need on day one.

  4. Show scripting even if it is small

PowerShell that automates onboarding, a Bash one-liner that saved an hour a week, a scheduled task that catches a failure before users report it. Support people who automate get moved into systems, security and cloud work — and this is the single clearest signal of that trajectory.

  5. Write the certifications in the order the market reads them

A+ then Network+ for the fundamentals, Microsoft or cloud certifications for the direction you are heading. List what is in progress with a date. In support hiring, certifications genuinely clear filters at entry — they simply stop mattering once you have the resolution numbers.

Mistakes that filter technical support specialists out

Ticket counts with no resolution figure

Volume is the queue's number, not yours. Add FCR and escalation rate.

A resume that is entirely reactive

If every bullet describes answering something, you are describing the part being automated. Add what you documented, fixed at root, or scripted away.

'Provided excellent customer service to end users'

Assumed. Use the space for the environment, the numbers and the improvements.

Listing every technology ever touched

Name what you would survive being questioned on. A 40-item list at tier 1 reads as a course syllabus rather than experience.

Hiding non-IT work that taught the job

Retail, hospitality and any role where you fixed things for frustrated people is real preparation. Frame it as the origin story, not a gap.

No mention of the ticketing platform

ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, Zendesk, Freshservice. It is matched literally and it tells the reader what process maturity you are used to.

Going to two pages

One page. Support hiring is high volume and the reader wants environment, numbers and certifications immediately.

Where it leadssystems administration, cloud and security all pay materially more

BLS median for computer user support specialists is $60,340 (May 2024). The broader computer support specialists occupation is projected to decline about 3% through 2034 — self-service and automation absorbing routine contacts — while still producing roughly 50,500 openings a year, essentially all from people moving on. Network support specialists are tracked separately and sit higher; support roles inside software companies and MSPs typically pay above internal corporate help desks.

Certifications worth listing

  • CompTIA A+ — the entry credential most support postings name, and the one that clears the most filters
  • CompTIA Network+ — the natural second step, and the point at which networking troubleshooting stops being guesswork
  • Microsoft MS-900 / MD-102 — relevant in the Microsoft-heavy environments that dominate corporate support
  • AZ-104 or AWS SysOps — the certification that signals you are heading toward systems and cloud rather than staying on the desk
  • ITIL Foundation — worth it in large enterprises and MSPs where the process vocabulary is part of the job

Technical Support Specialist resume FAQ

What metrics belong on an IT support resume?

First-contact resolution, escalation rate, tickets closed per week, SLA attainment and CSAT — with the team average beside them where you have it. The pair that matters most is resolution against escalation, because together they say whether tickets ended with you.

Is help desk a dead-end job?

It is the most common entry point into IT and it is a dead end only if the resume stays reactive. BLS projects a small decline as automation absorbs routine contacts, which makes the automating half of the work — documentation, imaging, scripting, root-cause fixes — the part worth building and writing about.

How do I get a first IT support job with no experience?

Get A+, build a home lab you can talk about specifically, and mine your existing work for the technical thing you already became responsible for — the store's tills, the office printer, the team's spreadsheets. Then write availability and willingness to work a shift rota, because entry-level support is a staffing problem as much as a skills one.

Does a home lab count?

As evidence, yes, and it is worth a bullet at entry level. Be specific: what you built, what broke, what you learned fixing it. 'Windows Server with AD and a small Hyper-V environment' is credible; 'home lab' on its own is not.

How do I move from support into systems, cloud or security?

Automate something and document it, then put both on the resume. Take the tickets nobody wants — the recurring fault, the imaging process, the onboarding workflow — and turn them into a fix that persists. Add a directional certification (AZ-104, AWS SysOps, Security+) to signal where you are heading.

Should I list every operating system and application I have supported?

No. Name the environment precisely — user count, sites, Windows/macOS mix, identity platform, ticketing system — and list the technologies you could be questioned on. A long undifferentiated list reads as coursework.

How long should it be, and does layout matter?

One page. And yes — support postings attract very high volume and are filtered by software first, so keep it single-column. Our testing of 36 layouts through four production parsers showed decorative templates are where the text stream scrambles, which is how your certifications end up detached from your name.
