How to write a teaching assistant resume
State how you meet the paraprofessional requirement
Under ESSA, paraprofessionals with instructional duties in Title I programmes must have completed two years of study at an institution of higher education, hold an associate or higher degree, or pass a formal state or local assessment such as ParaPro. Put yours in the top third — 'ParaPro assessment passed (2021)' or '68 semester credits completed'. District HR has to evidence this, and a file that leaves them guessing waits behind files that do not.
Write for special education, because that is where the jobs are
Most paraprofessional openings are special education seats. Name the disability categories you have supported, the settings (inclusion, resource, self-contained), the accommodations you implemented and the data you collected. Even if your experience is general education, any exposure to IEP accommodations belongs on the page.
Quantify the support, not the sentiment
Number of students on your caseload, class size, group sizes, grade levels, years with the same student. Districts calibrate on this. 'Passionate about helping children learn' is on every resume in the stack and distinguishes nobody.
Put the safety and behaviour credentials on the page
CPI or Safety-Care, CPR and First Aid, mandated-reporter training, and any district-specific behaviour training. Schools screen for these because they carry liability, and they are often the practical difference between two otherwise similar candidates.
Show you understand the boundary of the role
Paras work under the direction of a licensed teacher. Writing 'under the lead teacher's direction', 'implemented the plan written by the special education teacher' shows you know where your judgement stops — which is exactly what a principal wants to see before putting you next to a vulnerable child.

Never stating the ESSA qualification route
Name it explicitly: assessment passed, credits completed or degree held. It is a compliance checkbox someone has to tick, and leaving it implicit stalls the file.
Describing the job as generic classroom help
Most postings are special education. Lead with IEP implementation, behaviour plans and data collection if you have them.
Naming a student, even by first name
FERPA applies to you. Describe needs and settings — 'a nonverbal student using an AAC device' — never identities.
Leaving off CPR, First Aid or de-escalation training
These are liability-relevant and cheap to obtain. If you have them, list them with currency dates; if you do not, they are a fast investment.
A summary made entirely of feelings about children
Warmth is assumed. Use those three lines for setting, caseload, qualification route and one thing you are unusually good at.
Ignoring non-classroom experience that transfers
Camp counselling, coaching, childcare, youth ministry and caregiving all demonstrate supervision and behaviour management. Write them as work.
Going over one page
One page. A principal or HR clerk reading a stack before the school year starts will not read more, and there is rarely more to say.

Employment is projected to decline about 1% through 2034, but roughly 170,400 openings are still expected each year — effectively all of them from people leaving the occupation rather than from growth. Pay is usually set by a district salary schedule and often follows the school calendar rather than a 12-month year.

What qualifications do I need to be a teaching assistant?
For instructional roles in Title I programmes, ESSA requires one of three: two years of college study, an associate or higher degree, or a passing score on a formal state or local assessment such as ParaPro. Some states add their own permit. Non-Title-I and non-instructional posts can be more flexible, but districts generally hire to the higher standard because staff move between buildings.
Should I say 'teaching assistant' or 'paraprofessional'?
Use whichever the posting uses, and mention the other once. Districts variously say paraprofessional, para-educator, instructional aide, educational assistant and teaching assistant for the same job, and the filter matches the string on the requisition.
How do I write about a student I supported without breaking confidentiality?
Describe needs, settings and supports, never identities: 'a nonverbal student using an AAC device across a full school day', 'eight students with autism, ADHD and specific learning disabilities'. FERPA binds you, and a principal reads a leak as a reason not to hire.
I have no school experience — what counts?
Camp counselling, coaching, childcare, tutoring, youth programmes and caring for a family member with disabilities all count. Write them as jobs, with group sizes, ages and what you were responsible for. Then get the qualification route sorted, because that is the part that cannot be substituted.
Is teaching assistant work a route into teaching?
Frequently, yes — many districts run grow-your-own programmes and tuition support for paras pursuing licensure, and classroom experience is genuinely valuable in a teacher-preparation programme. If that is your aim, say so briefly in the summary; districts investing in these pipelines like to see it.
Why do so many jobs open each year if employment is declining?
Because turnover is high. BLS projects roughly 170,400 openings a year through 2034 despite a projected 1% decline in the occupation — essentially all of them replacing people who leave. Practically, that means the market stays open even where headcount is not growing.
How long should the resume be, and does the format matter?
One page, plainly formatted.
